2009.9.8Excellent Impact Resistance of SN100C at Low Temperatures
Strength of Lead-Free Solder - Results of Charpy Impact Test
The Charpy Impact Test is used to measure the impact resistance of a material by measuring the amount of energy absorbed by the test piece. The Impact Strength can be calculated from the Charpy Test to evaluate the toughness of the test piece and the resistance to fracture of the material. In general, the more brittle the test piece, the lower the resulting Charpy Impact Strength.
The Charpy Impact Test was performed with the temperature range from -195℃ to 100℃ on the lead free solders, Sn-5%Ag, Sn-4%Ag-0.5%Cu, Sn-3%Ag-0.5%Cu, Sn-0.7%Cu(Ni) known as SN100C, 99.99%Sn, and Sn-0.7%Cu as well as Sn-37Pb. It was found that Sn-0.7%Cu(Ni) (SN100C) demonstrated its superiority in impact resistance at low temperature, as low as -120℃, in comparison to Ag containing lead-free solders and Sn-37Pb solder.
